Dear GenStatters,
I'm mailing to share the sad news that John Nelder died this morning in Luton & Dunstable Hospital, where he was recovering from a fall. He retained the strong interest in our work, and statistics generally, that we will all remember with deep affection. However, he was becoming increasingly frail and, I gather, died peacefully in his sleep.

I will put an obitrary onto the VSNi website next week but, for now, I will only mention his legacy of general balance, generalized linear models, hierarchical general linear models - and GenStat - which will keep him always in our thoughts.
Best wishes, Roger

Dear Roger,

Thank you for passing on this sad news.

There's a lot I don't know about John Nelder's life and legacy: the few conversations I had with him, and with other people about him, made it clear that I was only scratching the surface. So I'll be very interested to read your obituary. Make it as full as you can!

Best wishes,

Nick

Dear Roger,
This is, indeed, very sad news but those who knew John can take comfort
from the fact that he lived his intellectual life to the full to the end
and continued to practice his passions of statistics (and music) well
into his eighties. It is given to very few to be such a positive example
right into old age.

There is an account of John Nelder's life up to 2003 in the conversation
with him published in
Senn, SJ. A conversation with John Nelder, Statistical Science 2003; 18:
118-131.
which may interest list members who have not seen it.

I look forward to your obituary.
Regards
Stephen

Dear Roger,

This is a great loss to the statistics community. I had few conversations with Prof Nelder and have been inpired by his work. I have read the article Stephen Senn refers to, I found it fascinating.

May his soul rest in peace.

kind regards,
Freedom
