VSNi is building a gallery of images of how you use our software using only photographs submitted by you. Over the weeks and months, hopefully the gallery will build into a unique picture of the breadth and range of the application of our software.

Competition

The most popular pictures will form a shortlist to be judged by a panel comprised of VSNi board and staff. Prizes will be awarded for the best submissions.

Applications are now closed. Here are the best of your pictures that formed the shortlist. Many thanks to all the photographers for your excellent photos!

The winner will be announced in the new year.

Figure 1: Monitoring calving Angus heifers at 2am in the snow in Montana (USA)

“February 2004 in Montana, freezing temperatures and snow, someone had to keep an eye on the heifers in case any run into difficulties with calving. This is the scene in the coral with the lights on and the calving shed in the background.”

“Looks a bit chilly to be sitting on the ground, you breed them tough in Montana!” - the newsletter team.

Figure 5: Graveyard shift! Sweeping up strawberry root weevils at midnight.

“The larvae of strawberry root weevils damage roots, but it's easiest to assess the effects of control treatments by doing counts of the adults. Of course they only come out at night. And who ever said public servants don't work hard? We use GenStat software to compare weevil populations and strawberry yields.”

Figure 7: Morning stroll to work

“I snapped this image as I was taking a morning stroll along THE STRAND in Townsville, Queensland when I was working there for CSIRO. The foreground is THE ROCKPOOL, a public fresh sea water swimming pool. You can't swim in the ocean during summer as the jellyfish "Stingers" have been known to kill. In the background you can see MAGNETIC ISLAND covered in morning mist. The temperature that time of the year is approx 20 Deg C overnight - hence the mist. Magnetic Island is well populated and residents commute to Townsville by boat each day. The island was used as an American garrison during WW2. I can't think of a much better way to start the day - Stroll, swim then breakfast at the Sea bar.”

“Thanks Dale - we're all suitably jealous!” - the newsletter team.

Figure 8: Goldcrest.

“This picture was taken during Easter and it is a goldcrest. Very hard to take pictures of them because they are so fast and are the smallest birds in Europe.”

Figure 9: The New Generation of NERICA farmers.

“During the heading stage of NERICA-4, young boys are enthusiastic to keep the birds away. They know that every grain formed on the spikelet will improve on their food security as well as improve their livelihood.”

Figure 10: Rothamsted Manor.

“Rothamsted Research was the birthplace of GenStat. Within the Rothamsted Research estate is Rothamsted Manor, former home of Sir John Bennet Lawes, who started the original experimental station. The photograph was taken in February 2007.”
