Error ‘License error – checksum incorrect’, when trying to open software up

Problem

User is receiving error message 'License error - checksum incorrect' when trying to open software up after installing a license key

Solution

The error message you are receiving indicates that ASReml /GenStat can not find the license key in the correct location.  Please could you check that the license file has not got a hidden .txt extension on the end of it and that it has been saved in the correct folder.

To check this open “C:\Program Files\Common Files\VSN International\Licenses” in Windows Explorer, go to Tools|Folder Options, select the View tab, then scroll down and find “Hide extensions for known file types”. Make sure this option is unselected. Now you should be able to see if the asreml.lic or genstat.lic  file has a hidden extension.  If so, then please rename this to asreml.lic or genstat.lic, depending  on what software package you are using.

If you have a Windows XP machine then the license key will need to be saved in C:\Program files\<software folder>\Bin.

  1. Software not working, license key is saved but asking to register for a key
  2. ASRemlW, error message – file is already open or cannot be accessed
  3. GenStat Discovery/Teaching license error, can not install on Vista or Windows 7
  4. Installing an ASReml 2/3 license key onto a stand alone windows PC
  5. Installing a GenStat 11th/12th license key onto a stand alone PC

Applies to:

  • ASReml 2 for Windows
  • ASReml 3 for Windows
  • GenStat
