In April VSNi continued with our pledge to assist the developing world with the formation of our third Centre of Excellence at the University of Brawijaya (UB), at Malang in Indonesia. VSNi have provided GenStat free to UB, so that researchers and scientists at UB may be trained in GenStat and will be able to provide support and training to other GenStat users in Indonesia. The university will promote and encourage the use of GenStat, with support and help from VSNi.
We are delighted to be working with UB and specifically Professor Loekito Adi Soehono (left of picture) and Dr Detha Mitakda (3rd from left in picture), who will provide the GenStat support in Indonesia. GenStat has already been adopted: “A lecturer from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Dr. Ir. V.M. Ani Nurgiartiningsih, MSc even uses this program to present her research result in Germany next August”, Prof. Soehono said.
Interviewed by PRASETYA Online (the University’s online magazine) about the use of the program, Stewart said: ” this software has developed so fast into (the) international standard for research, especially on the fields of agro complex (agroscience)…..countries such as Australia, Europe and Northern America use the program widely. Before going to Indonesia, the company has also promoted the program in China and Vietnam. It’s just that in Indonesia the program hasn’t been used widely, and the company trust UB to distribute the program.”
Commenting on this, the Dean of Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Prof. Dr. Marjono (4th from left in picture) replied: “This trust will support UB’s program to be world class university”, Prof. Mardjono said. Related to that, he will try to develop the use of GenStat in Indonesia, especially in UB.
GenStat is already a trusted and reliable data analysis package used across the world in a wide range of areas within the biological sciences. By providing it free to non-commercial organisations in the developing world as a part of our Discovery programme, we are enabling the developing world to compete with the rest of the world in research and development. This programme will greatly assist students and researchers at UB and across Indonesia, by providing access to one of the world’s best data analysis packages.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding was in conjunction with a series of GenStat workshops given by Mick O’Neill, Director of Statistical Advisory & Training Service Pty Ltd of Sydney, Australia.
Providing a tried and trusted product such as GenStat, free to use to all but the commercial sector to Indonesia, will greatly assist researchers and students with their work and analysis. With questions surrounding world food security, climate change and ecological issues all intertwined, GenStat brings all these concerns together in one package and will prove to be a major resource pool for Indonesia to take advantage of.
